Basic Know-How of Personal Safety Your Kids Should Be Aware Of!

Children are pure and innocent, but it’s a cruel world. A lot can harm them if they aren’t careful, whether it be unfortunate circumstances, inanimate objects, or unsavory characters. Moreover, you can’t look after them always. After all, you must provide for your family by going to work. So, what are you to do? The answer is easy – Awareness!

As responsible parents, you should take pre-emptive actions by making them aware of certain things that’ll prep them to remain safe. So let us, the Delhi Public School, Sushant Lok, positioned among the best schools in Gurgaon, bring you peace of mind and provide you with some tips on personal safety you can share ahead with your children.

The ABCs of Personal Safety for Kids

We’ve already stated that safety is paramount for your kids. However, you must know what to teach them to make them aware. Here’s what they must know:

  • Contact Information: Children should always be aware of their contact information because you should be the first to be made aware of when/if they get into trouble. They should know their home address, nearest landmark, your and your spouse’s telephone number, and your full name. Additionally, it would be helpful if they also knew the contact details of a close relative in case you’re unavailable. Leave no stone unturned and ensure that they memorize the necessary information. Another action you must take is writing down this information on the first page of a school notebook and keeping it in their school bag.

  • Be Wary of Strangers: Strangers are called strangers for a reason. One doesn’t know who they are and what their motives are. Adults can approach them relatively safely, but one can’t advise the same for kids. There are plenty of individuals who have nefarious intentions that we will not discuss here. Just know your kids should avoid them unless closely supervised by you. We find too many unpleasant instances each day on the news where a stranger was involved in a child’s misfortune.

  • Traffic Safety Rules: These are elementary safety tips, but your child must know about them. Not every driver is safe, and records of road accidents prove it. To minimize the risk of injury, you must inevitably teach your kids certain things, such as:
    • They should only cross roads via zebra crossings.
    • They should only cross roads when the traffic signals to the cars glow red.
    • They should always look left and right before crossing.
    • They should always use their peripheral vision while crossing.
    • They should only use sidewalks.
    • They should always let automobiles pass first and only cross when there’s no traffic.
    • They should always wear seatbelts when in cars.
    • They should always wear helmets when riding bicycles.

  • Being Calm If They Get Lost: We often hear about occurrences where children get lost in large gatherings. Teach your children to stay calm and state this rudimentary tip to avoid suffering from a grievous loss. Tell them that if they get lost in large gatherings or a crowded area, they must seek and go to security personnel, if any, or any elder they know, and they’ll take care of it with ease. If it’s a market, tell your child to go to the cashier, and they, too, will help track you down. Once again, knowing your contact details (by heart) will help your child. It’s because if the security/cashier can’t find you personally, they’ll contact you by phone.

  • Objects to Avoid: Matchsticks, glass, insect repellants, cooking range, knives, etc. these are all objects you should keep out of your children’s reach. These are inanimate objects but dangerous beyond comprehension for your children. Any sane person would know why!
