Are You Unknowingly Killing Your Child’s Innate Curiosity?

A parent’s dictionary contemplates the word ‘child’ synonymous with ‘curiosity.’ After all, children are the 24×7 sudokus to which there are no solutions. No wonder, it is almost like a fixed daily routine for the parents to deal with the endless queries and infinite questions put forth by their children. One will hardly find a parent ‘not’ letting out and not saying that ‘there is just no limit to their numerous why’s and how’s.’

At Delhi Public School, Sushant Lok, one of the top 10 schools in Gurgaon, we understand that at times, though unknowingly, parents tend to brush off and disregard the curious behavior of the kids. Remember how many times we all just nod our heads, busy looking into our Macs, as an answer to queries of our kids? We understand that the repetitiveness involved in the process of answering the constant queries of kids makes the parents’ so-called job of responding and replying much more mundane. As a result, it is only natural if you unconsciously start dismissing or neglecting the queries. However, your disinterest in their queries actually ends up killing the curiosity budding in those young minds. And we are certain none of you would want that to happen!

So today, through this write-up, we want to convey to the parents that if any of the below-mentioned scenarios are being practiced by you as a parent, then your child and you are unfortunately sailing in the wrong boat. Take a note and try to rectify the wrongs.

  • Spoon feeding or shadowing the child everywhere
  • Forceful conformation to surroundings
  • Kids always remaining under a protective cover from all sorts of dangers.
  • Negligible family time
  • Kids requiring assistance in even the minute aspects
  • Stuffing them with fears and apprehensions
  • Unlimited screen or gadget time
  • Not enough encouragement to read

Donning the hat of mentor, we, at DPSSL, positioned among the top 10 schools in Gurgaon, believe that it becomes our responsibility to make not just our pupils but also the parent fraternity conscious and vigilant about the said subject through some pointers. So, let’s get cracking.

We all are cognizant that kids are curious since birth. Haven’t you noticed the newborns following commotions or people moving around with their eyes? Or haven’t you seen the toddlers always trying to reach the things kept at height to touch, feel, and know more about them? That’s because they are born with a high degree of natural inquisitiveness. However, we adults often forget that this attitude only ultimately fosters lifelong learning in the kids. It is hence pivotal that instead of letting their curiosity fade off, we help them retain and nourish their innate curiosity. And on that note, we have brought forth for you today a few tips and strategies not to let our children’s innate curiosities die a silent death.

  • Promote their innate talents. Be it dancing, singing, playing any musical instrument, gymnastics, or dramatics, provide them chances to pursue their potentials and prove their mettle.
  • Let them uncover the outside world. You can opt for traveling together as a family to other states or countries, camping, or just simply visiting the neighborhood museum.
  • Allow them to indulge in free play. Unstructured and uninstructed play heightens the curiosity levels among kids.
  • Spend some quality family time each day. It could be a simple task such as going for walks, playing a sport together as a family, baking a cake, or simply shopping. Activities like these not only aid in family bonding but also fuel the innate curiosity of children.
  • Have open-ended sessions with kids. Convert all inquiries of the kids into open-ended question-answer sessions. Let them reply first, whatsoever it be. Then, stimulate their inquisitive nature by putting forth why, when, what, and how behind an issue.
  • Share your own experiences with them. Memories and experiences, when shared, become part and parcel of a lifetime. It’s true with children because they remember the excitement and happiness so well.

So, these were our few cents to share with you on how you can help preserve your little one’s inquisitiveness. Having said that, we, at DPSSL, ranked among the top 10 schools in Gurgaon, also understand that just as each child is unique, so are the ways to handle them. We would hence urge our valued parents to come forth and share your own ways of nurturing the innate curiosity of your kids. After all, each new insight will ultimately be meant for the greater good of our little ones!
